DNS - Mail Backup - MX Backup

E-mail has become a mission critical service on the Internet -- we have come to rely on guaranteed e-mail delivery. The Mail/MX Backup Service gives you peace of mind by queuing your mail when your primary mail server is unavailable.

[edit] Activation

• Login to your account
• Click on DNS in the top navigation bar
• Click on Mail/MX Backup in the menu

[edit] Configuration

If you have not already done so, you must first configure at least one primary MX record for your mail domain. After you have configured this record, your next step is to setup your Mail/MX Backup (see screenshot).

When you enable the MX backup service, additional MX records are automatically added to the DNS system. These additional MX records are added with a low priority (100 or higher).

[edit] Limits

The Mail/MX backup service has the following limits:

• Mail is kept for up to 14 days
• A maximum of 250,000 messages are queued per domain

Please contact technical support if you require extensions on these limits.

[edit] Status Messages

A status report shows the number of mails queued on the backup servers (see screenshot). This information is updated every 15 minutes.

[edit] How Backup Mail Is Delivered

When your mail server is offline, the mail backup server will begin to queue your messages. When you mail server comes back online, our mail backup servers will automatically attempt to redeliver your mail. Delivery attempts are made every 5 to 30 minutes (this time depends on a number of factors including how long the mail has been queued).
